Most parents already know the benefits to reading aloud to your child, and do so often during the preschool years. But why stop there? A family reading night is an excellent way to not only spend quality time with your children (and any age) but to reinforce those lifelong skills that reading aloud provides.

Did you know, reading aloud:

Creates a thinker;

Develops an appreciation for art forms;
Helps to ensure academic success;
Enhances attention span;
Develops creativity and imagination

In celebration of Black History Month this February and to start a new tradition of family reading night, why not learn more about some of our country’s heroes and heroines through books.

As an adult, Frederick Douglass became a great speaker and writer. Have students visit the Library of Congress American Memory website to read the writings of Frederick Douglass in the Frederick Douglass Papers exhibit.
