Literacy Link!

Health News—A minute a day can improve reading skills

LOUISVILLE, Ky., July 15 (UPI) -- Parents need only spend one minute a day to help their children improve their literacy skills, a U.S. literacy advocate says.

Sharon Darling of the National Center for Family Literacy says it only takes a minute to sing short songs like "Row, Row, Row Your Boat." Then leave off the last word each time until there are no words left.

Darling suggests other ways to build literacy skills. READ ON!

Inspired through History

Who … or what … will be your child’s source of inspiration this coming year? What will he or she aspire to do? The positive and negative catalysts that influence today’s children are too numerous to decipher. However, it is the role of the parents and educators to introduce positive sources of influence. A look through our American history provides some amazing accomplishments of our heroes and heroines.

"The Story of Phillis Wheatley is particularly inspirational . . . young readers will be fascinated by Young Patriots like the gifted Phillis Wheatley, her self-doubts, and her ultimate triumph over circumstances that would defeat most people."
-- ForeWord Magazine, review

Young readers will aspire to pursue his or her own creative dreams with Phillis Wheatley’s accomplishments as a guide.

Phillis Wheatley

Volume 10 of the Young Patriots Series
Phillis Wheatley, Young Revolutionary Poet
depicts the dramatic girlhood adventures of the woman
who would become the first notable, female
African-American writer to publish a book.

In celebration of Phillis’s first published poem this December, here is a classroom activity from the Phillis Wheatley, Young Revolutionary Poet Teacher’s Guide:

Students can see a photograph of Phillis’s published book online. Phillis’s credit on the title page and circling the portrait is especially interesting. It reads: “Phillis Wheatley, Negro Servant to Mr. John Wheatley, of Boston, in New England.”
