The Cybils Awards for Children’s Literature—
Nominate your favorites!

The nominations for the 2008 Cybils Awards are open and we’d like your help! If you have a favorite Young Patriots Series title, we invite you to nominate it for best title in Middle Grade Fiction—simply go to the Cybils Nomination page , scroll down to “Middle Grade Fiction” and type in the title and author. The category is described as follows:

“The middle grade years are those with the most potential to turn a child into a reader for life. It's often the books you read between the ages of 8-12 that you remember long into adulthood as your dearest books of all. These are the years when kids really and truly start to figure themselves out as readers--their likes and dislikes and all the rest in between.”

Thank you for your support of the Young Patriots Series.

November is Aviation History Month!

Which Young Patriots can claim a seat in the cockpit of Aviation History?

Once nicknamed “Lady Lindy” because of her slim physique and facial resemblance to Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart proved that impossible dreams can be achieved when she became the first woman to ever fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean!

When first starting to fly, Eddie Rickenbacker was often airsick! Yet he overcame and was recognized as a fearless World War I flying Ace.

Learn more about the childhood adventures of these aviation pioneers in the Young Patriots Series.

George Rogers Clark

Volume 8 of the Young Patriots Series
George Rogers Clark , Boy of the Northwest Frontier
depicts the boyhood adventures of the explorer who
helped with the Northwest Territory

In celebration of Clark’s birthday this November, here is a classroom activity from the George Rogers Clark, Boy of the Northwest Frontier Teacher’s Guide:

Divide students into teams of three to learn more about colonial life. Have each team research one region: Southern Colonies, New England Colonies, and the Middle Colonies. Create a large Venn diagram (interlocking circles) comparing daily life in each region.
