As an adult, this Founding Father’s accomplishments were legendary—he was an aide to General George Washington, architect of the Constitution, served as the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury AND his face is featured on the $10 bill! He was tragically killed in a duel with Aaron Burr resulting from a feud between the two men regarding Hamilton’s support of John Adams for president instead of Mr. Burr.
The latest offering from the Young Patriots Series introduces children to the young "Alec" growing up in the Caribbean as he dreams of visiting the land called America. Accompanied by his parrot, Hurry-Up, and his companion, Poleon, Alec's tranquil days are filled with the books he loves and visits to the waterfront to greet the large ships arriving from Europe—until his uncle insists that Alec fit riding lessons into his schedule.
Kids will identify with Alec's struggle to overcome his fear of horses and cheer at his courage as he narrowly escapes a violent hurricane while on horseback, all while keeping his eye on the prize—school in America.

Volume 14 of the Young Patriots Series
– Alexander Hamilton, Young Statesman –
depicts the boyhood adventures of one of our
most influential founding fathers.
In honor of the upcoming release of the newest addition to the Young Patriots Series, here are some classroom activities from the Alexander Hamilton, Young Statesman Teacher’s Guide:
1. In Chapter XIV, Mr. Knox encourages Alex to write down the details of the hurricane. Those details were actually part of a letter that Alex sent to his father. Students can read an excerpt of that letter at the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.
2. In Chapter 1, Alec finds a crate washed up on the shore. A very vocal parrot is inside.
Have students write imaginative stories about finding a crate on the shore. Their stories should include details of how they found it and what was inside.
