Hello! Can another school year be drawing to a close already? Although the calendar year is January-December, our Young Patriots year runs from July to June. We are anticipating another great 2007-2008 and will be joining you again for back-to-school AND the introduction of the newest Young Patriot in August!

Research has shown that kids lose reading skills during the summer break. Why not make plans to take the children in your life to the library on a regular basis this summer? For more ideas on how to keep the kids in your life reading all summer, check Summer Reading Tips for Parents.

We’re taking a vacation in July so your next newsletter will arrive on or around August 1. Have a wonderful summer and don’t miss our Young Patriots Fun Family Trips featured below.

Warmly,

Florrie

Lew Wallace, Boy Writer
depicts the childhood adventures of the
best-selling novelist and Civil War General.

In honor of the Battle of Monocacy this July, here is a classroom activity from the Lew Wallace, Boy Writer Teacher’s Guide:

There are many mentions throughout the book of famous historical figures, including William Henry Harrison, John Paul Jones, Daniel Boone, George Rogers Clark, Davy Crockett, and Jim Bowie.
