FlorrieDear Subscribers-

As a child growing up in the 1950's, I would ride my blue Schwinn Flexible Flyer bike to the library every week. I can still remember the whiff of pencil shavings from the Boston pencil sharpener on the bookshelf mingled with the faint scent of musty covers from the old World Book Encyclopedia. The ink-on-paper aroma from the rows of Nancy Drew, Bobbsey Twins, Black Beauty and Wizard of Oz books in the Children's Room mixed with the smell of cardboard from the thousands of cards neatly filed in the wooden card catalogue file.

The card catalogue is digital now and the concept of a "book" has changed dramatically from 1950 to 2007, but the library remains the hub of the community and the keeper of our culture-celebrate National Library Week and take the young reader in your life to the library today!

We are thrilled to announce the debut of the first 9 volumes of the Young Patriots Series in audiobook format. Available from Blackstone Audio, the audiobooks have been two years in the making! Get the details later in the newsletter.

Happy Spring!

Warmly,

Florrie

Poets Among Us.

Celebrating National Poetry Month this April

The magnificent poets of our past have enriched our history to one of cultural diversity and beauty.

Friend of Mark Twain and President Benjamin Harrison, 19th-century poet and Young Patriot James Whitcomb Riley immortalized life in the Midwest in his beloved poetry still read today in classrooms around the country. Because of his vivid depictions of barefoot children tromping among the cornfields and through the “watering holes,” laced with “good ol’ family values” and crisp morning dew on the harvest, Riley became known as the “Children’s Poet.” Riley has inspired many of us—some to see things as they are, some to see things as they could be and some…to follow in Riley’s own footsteps in strive to inspire others.

Perhaps there is a young woman today, whom you may already know, who possesses the ability to educate others regarding human sacrifice and political injustice in a manner so beautiful one may mistake it for simply a lovely demonstration of poetry. Such were the works of Young Patriot Phillis Wheatley, a young girl sold into slavery during the Revolutionary era, who was largely self-taught and later became the first notable African-American writer in America.
“…young readers will be fascinated by Young Patriots like the gifted Phillis Wheatley, her ultimate triumph over circumstances that would defeat most people.” – ForeWord Magazine.

Celebrate National Poetry Month this April by finding a poet who inspires you!

Beyond the Book . . .
Activities for Kids, Parents and Teachers
Lew Wallace

Volume 3 of the Young Patriots Series
Lew Wallace, Boy Writer
depicts the boyhood adventures of one of the
most famous writers of the 19th century.

In honor of Lew Wallace’s birthday this April, here is a classroom activity from the Lew Wallace, Boy Writer
Teacher’s Guide:

Lew’s teacher tells him that the secret to writing is: “Everything must be clearly stated—Everything!” Challenge students to write a set of directions for a very common task, such as brushing one’s teeth, sharpening a pencil, or making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. When they’re done, have students read their directions aloud as you follow them, EXACTLY. This can be a really fun (and funny) exercise and will surely drive home the point about the value of precision in writing.
