Hurricane Katrina may have disappeared from the media, but the devastating aftereffects have certainly not disappeared from the lives of those who live in the areas that were destroyed. One young senior in high school decided to help and Patria Press was proud to support her effort. With her permission, I am republishing her letter to donors here. The photos she mentioned are not included in order to protect the privacy of the children:
Hello Everyone:
I wanted to send you a note to say thank you again for supporting me in my Senior Community Service project to restock the libraries of Nichols and Gorenflo Elementary Schools in Biloxi, Mississippi. It has been a tremendous amount of fun and hard work. With the support of generous and caring people like you, I feel that I have succeeded in restocking these libraries. The final total for books donated was 8,123. AMAZING.
I have attached photos of the rebuilt library at Gorenflo Elementary School. This library wouldn't have been possible without the generosity of each of you. Thank you for taking part in the rebuilding of Gorenflo's library. As you can see from the photos, it is a wonderful and peaceful place for the children to go and enjoy the adventure of reading. Mr. Hunt, Gorenflo Librarian, has worked very hard to provide a wonderful library for the children.
Sincerely,
Merrie Campbell

Women like Merrie are who we honor during Women's History Month-and year round.

American Heroines—Past & Present!
Celebrating Women’s History Month
Perhaps the most popular answer given by children when asked “What woman in your life has affected you the most?” is:
“My mommy!”
As it is so important to honor those women in our lives today—mothers, sisters, teachers, friends—it is equally important to remember the heroic women of the past.
The ability to read a book during this year’s Read Across America day that was written by a woman is a luxury that may never have been granted us had it not been for such pioneering young female writers, such as Phillis Wheatley. Young Patriot Wheatley was the first African-American poet to be published in America!
The idea that women can break away from any boundaries and soar above the clouds was one that aviation pioneer and Young Patriot Amelia Earhart made a reality when she became the first person to fly across the Atlantic Ocean!
Mahalia Jackson, the Young Patriot who became known as the Queen of Gospel, taught women that their voices too could be heard and could make a profound difference. Not only was Jackson the first gospel singer to have a regular show on network radio, she aided her good friend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the fight for racial equality during the Civil Rights Movement.
And all young ladies need the support and encouragement to have pride in themselves, to stand up and make a difference. Young Patriot Juliette Low helped to make that happen when she created the Girl Scouts in Savannah, Georgia during the early 1900s.
During Women’s History Month this March, honor those heroines from our past as well as those in our lives today. Learn more about them by reading their biographies, asking questions, or spending time with them…I bet you’ll discover that even though they have all achieved great things, they are also just like you and me.

What are some of Daisy’s qualities, or personality traits, that you think helped to shape who she became as an adult? (Students might identify such traits as courage, stubbornness, or a determination to do things that boys did.) What personality traits did she have that you didn’t like? Why? What are some of YOUR best qualities, or traits of which you are most proud?
