Audubon’s passion for capturing birds and animals in his drawings inspired others to respect and conserve the natural habit of this word’s wildlife. From the Creator of
the Young Patriots Series

FlorrieHello! The Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm in Dayton, Ohio invited the Young Patriots Series illustrator, Cathy Morrison, to participate in their Winter Speakers' Series, so Cathy and I took a wintry and beautiful trip to Ohio last week. Cathy is a wonderful speaker as well as an accomplished artist and did a great job introducing the attendees to the ins and outs of illustrating John Audubon, Young Naturalist. I thought you might like to share the day with us:

I will leave you with a thought from New York Public Library Donnel Children's branch Senior Librarian Elizabeth Bird. Author of a children's literature blog , she gave me permission to quote the following from her article "A Kid's Librarian Advice,"

"Good books are the books kids will want to read but at the same time are the books you want them to read."

Celebrate Black History Month!

Warmly,

Florrie

Black History Month —
Honoring Those Who Came Before Us; That We May Not
Forget Their Sacrifices For Our Freedoms.

It was only in the last decade that many Americans did not have the luxury of freedom. This crime of humanity reached a climax during what we now call The Civil Rights Movement, with such leaders as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Young Patriot Mahalia Jackson. A century before them, however, Young Patriot Frederick Douglass had become a leader of the Abolitionist movement, which fought to end slavery during the decades prior to the Civil War. And a century before Douglass, Young Patriot Phillis Wheatley was the first notable African-American writer in America. Working from the advances of their predecessors for the equality of all human beings, those on the forefront of the modern day Civil Rights Movement helped to deliver us a more equal and peaceful America.

Rights and Equality for All . . .

Arriving just in time to help honor Black History Month this year is Volume 13 of the Young Patriots Series Frederick Douglass, Young Defender of Human Rights. Douglass began his life in slavery and grew up to become an advisor to presidents, author of several autobiographies, and tireless advocate and public speaker in support of civil rights.

Largely self-educated, Phillis Wheatley rose from slavery to become one of the most well-known poets of her day. Read about Phillis as a child, kidnapped at the age of seven and sold at a slave auction in Boston, in Phillis Wheatley, Young Revolutionary Poet. Her inspirational perseverance to achieve the at-the-time impossible feat empowered those who followed her.

“The Queen of Gospel” Mahalia Jackson was among the Mothers of the Modern Day Civil Rights Movement. As Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stood at the podium during the famous Civil Rights March on Washington, Jackson encouraged him to proceed with the “I have a dream” speech—a speech that King was not initially going to give! As depicted in Volume 7 of the Young Patriots Series Mahalia Jackson, Gospel Singer & Civil Rights Champion young readers learn of Jackson’s struggle from impoverished beginnings in New Orleans to becoming the first gospel singer to have a regular show on network radio.

Pick up a Book! Honor those who paved the way for the liberties we so often take for granted today by learning more about these courageous men and women.

Activities for President's Day!

The book is filled with historical references to several major events in American history (i.e., the settling of Jamestown, writing of the Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights, and slavery) and people in history (e.g., Benedict Arnold, George Washington, and Richard Lee). Divide students into teams to conduct research and write about these important events and people. Compile all writing into a class American History Guide.
