Meet Frederick Douglass—Young Defender of Human Rights!
By Elisabeth P. Myers (with original illustrations by
Cathy Morrison, shown below)

“Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”
—Frederick Douglass

The next day Hugh Auld came home unexpectedly and found Mrs. Auld giving Fred his lesson.

“Sophia, what do you think you’re doing?” he almost shouted.

“Teaching Fred to read,” she replied simply. “He’s a very apt pupil.”

“Well, stop teaching him at once!” Mr. Auld commanded rather sharply. “It’s unsafe to teach a slave to read.”

“Why!” she asked, shocked.

“The first thing you know, he’ll be reading anti-slavery literature. Then who knows what he’d do? We might not even be safe in his company.”

As an adult, Frederick Douglass would become a leader of the Abolitionist movement, which fought to end slavery during the decades prior to the Civil War. Born a slave, and escaping to freedom as a young man, Douglass was a key figure in the Underground Railroad and became an author and advisor to four presidents.

Focusing on Frederick Douglass’s early years, in Frederick Douglass, Young Defender of Human Rights, children from ages 8-12 join Fred as he journeys from slavery to freedom and from illiteracy to education. Separated from his family at a young age, Fred learned early the horror and cruelty of a system where one human being owns another—as well as the kindness and support of those who taught him that education was the road to freedom.

As with all the Young Patriots Series titles, a sample chapter, Fun Facts About, timeline (When Frederick Douglass Lived), What Happened Next, What Does That Mean (vocabulary) and much more are yours to preview at the Young Patriots Series website

“I can say I never did more congenial, attractive, fascinating, and satisfactory work. True as a means of destroying slavery, it was like an attempt to bail out the ocean with a teaspoon, but the thought that there was one less slave, and one more freeman, brought to my heart unspeakable joy.”

—Frederick Douglass on the Underground Railroad.
