We're "here" because we love books.

Many of you are parents, educators, librarians, historians or just have an interest in children's literature, but we all share a passion for the printed word. Sure, books are my business, but I loved to read long before I went into publishing, and will continue to read always.

In the book business, we deal with huge companies on a daily basis. Small publishers consider them a necessary evil, and long ago we resigned ourselves to the fact that to them, we were just one tiny cog in a huge machine.

So imagine my surprise when I received a phone call several days ago from one of the biggest of the big wholesalers in the publishing industry. This particular woman was calling to verify what she felt might be a mistake in their database. Keep in mind their database held hundreds of thousands of bits of information, so I was mightily impressed at being personally called about my 13 titles. Not only that, but, as we chatted, she offered several great ways for me to market and promote my titles within their company-simply advice because she liked the books.

At the end of the conversation, I thanked her profusely for her time.

"No problem," she replied. "After all, we're all interested in the same thing-getting good books into the hands of children."

Big, small, we ARE all interested in the same thing, which is why I love the book industry.

Happy Back-to-School!

Warmly,

Florrie

Celebrate Southern Gospel Music Month…
with Civil Rights activist Mahalia Jackson

Martin Luther King, Jr. once spoke of his friend, Mahalia Jackson, by saying, “A voice like this comes, not once in a century, but once in a millennium.”

From impoverished beginnings in New Orleans, Louisiana, Mahalia Jackson, as an adult, became known as the “Queen of Gospel” and found special joy in encouraging young African-Americans to follow their own ambitions.

In celebrating Southern Gospel Music Month, we need only to look toward the life of Mahalia Jackson to learn that in honoring the music she shared, we also honor her efforts in the Civil Rights Movement.

Did You Know?
Fun Facts About Mahalia Jackson

  • Mahalia Jackson was the first gospel singer to have a regular show on network radio.
  • She performed at John F. Kennedy’s inauguration.
  • Mahalia is said to have encouraged Martin Luther King, Jr. to give his “I Have a Dream” speech during the March on Washington, which King had not originally anticipated doing at that time.
  • Mahalia Jackson is honored in the International Gospel Music Hall of Fame in Detroit. Learn More.
