Hook Kids on History and Reading in 2006
With The Young Patriots Series.

August is Inventors Month! All of the Young Patriots were inventors of some sort—and one, Abner Doubleday, is widely credited as inventing baseball even though there is no hard evidence he really did! Lew Wallace invented the aluminum fishing pole, Juliette Low invented a new organization for young girls that came to be called the Girl Scouts, and John Audubon was the first to use bands on birds in order to identify them year after year. This month, celebrate the creative thinkers and inventors past and present.

Welcome back! I hope you're all enjoying your summer-and some of you (like me) might be old enough to remember when August still WAS summer instead of the beginning of back-to-school! In many states, though, August still means the State Fair and Indiana is no exception. The Young Patriots and I will be appearing in the Indiana Authors booth at the Indiana State Fair on August 15-check later in this newsletter for full details. I would love to meet those of you who can stop by!

August marks the anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King's famous "I Have a Dream" speech (see calendar below). Mahalia Jackson was on the podium with Dr. King and sang before his speech. Mahalia Jackson, Gospel Singer and Civil Rights Champion, won the iParenting Media Award for excellence, and a video of an interview I did recently about the award can be found here. Choose "Book" and then select "Patria Press" from the drop-down menu.

Celebrate Aviation Day . . .
With the Young Patriots!

One hundred years ago, the idea that one day people would fly amongst the clouds, like birds, was unheard of. Yet today, flight is so common, the thought of not having it seems preposterous.

In Volume 6 of The Young Patriots Series, Eddie Rickenbacker Boy Pilor and Racer, readers learn of the boyhood adventures of the World War I Flying Ace. Rickenbacker had once said, “Courage is doing what you’re afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you’re scared.” Do you have a favorite pilot, past or present? Celebrate Aviation Day by learning more about your favorite aviator.

Aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart broke through social barriers for women aviators during the early years of aviation.

  • 1928. Amelia became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean as a passenger.
  • 1932. Amelia flew solo across the Atlantic—the first woman to do so.
  • 1935. Amelia was the first person to fly alone across the Pacific Ocean from Hawaii to California.

Aviation Day Activity!

On May 20, 1937, Amelia and her navigator, Fred Noonan, took off from Oakland, California to begin a record-breaking flight around the world. Her plane went down somewhere near New Guinea and Howland Island, and disappeared. Nine naval ships and more than 66 airplanes searched the area but never found a trace of Amelia, Fred or the plane.

Some say Amelia was on a secret government mission and was captured by the Japanese. Others say that she and Fred landed on Gardner Island instead of Howland Island and camped there waiting for help that never arrived. Many people have tried and are still trying today, but no one has yet solved the mystery of Amelia Earhart. What do you think happened?

Become a detective in search of Amelia! What was happening in the world in 1937 that may give clues to Amelia’s fatal mission? What was Amelia herself like? What really did happen during that last flight? Map out Amelia’s final flight on a world map with your own hypothesis.

Volume 6 of the Young Patriots Series
– Eddie Rickenbacker, Boy Pilot and Racer –
depicts the boyhood adventures of the
famous WWI flying ace and fearless racing driver.

From the Eddie Rickenbacker, Boy Pilot and Racer Teacher’s Guide

In Chapter 1, we learn that Eddie's family didn't have refrigeration. Instead they had a cellar where they buried a barrel filled with foods that needed to be kept cold. Have students investigate other early methods of refrigeration and create a timeline listing inventions that helped change the world through Eddie's lifetime (1890-1973).
