Hello to all. It's hard to believe that another school year is over already, but we've got lots of ideas in this newsletter to keep your children and students reading over the summer. Summer is baseball season, so don't miss our features on Abner Doubleday, "the most famous man who NEVER invented baseball!"

Late breaking news-in addition to the award as one of the 10 Outstanding Books in the "Most Inspirational to Youth" category (see below), Young Patriots Volume 11, Phillis Wheatley, Young Revolutionary Poet, has won a Merit Award in Children's Fiction from the Midwest Book Awards and a Bronze Award from ForeWord Magazine as Book of the Year in Juvenile Fiction. We are proud and grateful for the recognition, but are even more grateful to you, our readers, for your loyal support.

Remember, our "virtual" door is always open. I welcome your ideas and comments via email to fkichler@patriapress.com.

Have a wonderful June and July and we'll see you right back here in August!

Warmly,

Florrie

America’s Favorite Pastime!
Celebrating the Invention of Baseball

No real evidence exists, but Young Patriot, Abner Doubleday, is still widely credited for the invention of America’s favorite pastime—Baseball of course!

Abner Doubleday served in the Mexican War and in a campaign against the Seminole Indians in Florida as a young man; but became most known as a successful captain and lieutenant colonel, strongly opposed to slavery, in the Union army during the Civil War.

In honor of Doubleday’s birthday, June 26th is Baseball Day! Why not go outside for a good old-fashioned game of “base” with your children or students? Here is a great way to make education fun with baseball!

From the Abner Doubleday, Boy Baseball Pioneer Teacher’s Guide

Conduct research, in books and on the internet, to learn more about the history of baseball. Use the story as a reference by reminding students of the evolution of the game Abner played with his friends: one old cat, town ball, and eventually baseball.
