Hello to all! More than 90 people packed the Franklin College Student Center on April 24 to hear Young Patriots Series author Montrew Dunham and illustrator Cathy Morrison talk about writing, illustrating, publishing and the Young Patriots. The event was even more special to me as it was the very first time the Young Patriots Series Art Director, Illustrator, Author and Publisher were in the same place at the same time:
Here are a few more souvenirs of what was to me a truly memorable evening! Many thanks to John Krull, Director of the Pulliam School of Journalism at Franklin College, the Johnson County Community Foundation and all the libraries in Johnson County for their support of reading, children’s literature and the Young Patriots Series. Warmly, Florrie
OUTSIDE the Classroom…
As a young adventurer, John Audubon* hiked through the wilderness observing the animals and nature around him. One thing Audubon did during his hikes was to keep a nature journal. Later, as an adult, he would become America’s leading wildlife artist. Because hiking and even just walking is great activity for the body, a fun way to create a learning environment and stimulate physical health is to take Audubon’s lead—take a nature walk or hike and record the animals you encounter along the way! WANT MORE ACTIVITIES FOR THE MIND AND BODY?
*Check out a sample chapter, free Teacher’s guide and webquest and more at the John Audubon, Young Naturalist website!
The General Lew Wallace Study and Museum in Crawfordsville, Indiana is hosting the second annual Lew Wallace Academy in July for elementary and middle school students. The Academy “provides students with the opportunity to participate in workshops designed to promote leadership, character, life-long learning and to learn more about General Wallace.” Art activities, writing and even cooking are just some of the program features. For more information, call Bethany Moore, Assistant Director, at 765-362-5769 or email study@wico.net. Patria Press will give each student at the Academy a copy of Lew Wallace, Boy Writer and is proud to sponsor tuition for a student to attend!
