Special Announcement From the Creator of
the Young Patriots Series
Hello all! A busy month welcomes the newest Young Patriot and brings some very special visitors to Indiana:
Don't miss the opportunity to meet Young Patriots Series Illustrator AND Author on April 24 at Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana.
Young Patriots Series children's book author Montrew Dunham and illustrator Cathy Morrison will talk about their books, including how to get works published, at 6:30 pm in the Franklin College Napolitan Student Center's Branigin Room. Their collaborative efforts include James Whitcomb Riley, Abner Doubleday and Mahalia Jackson, three titles in the Young Patriots Series for children. The event is sponsored by Patria Press, the Franklin College Pulliam School of Journalism, the Edinburgh Public Library, Johnson County Public Library, Greenwood Public Library and the Johnson County Community Foundation.
Thanks for your great books!
Doors for the free program in the Napolitan Student Center's Branigin Room will open at 5:30 p.m. The libraries will have displays set up with information and give-aways. Books written and illustrated by Dunham and Morrison, respectively, will be available for sale, and following their presentation, they will sign books for attendees. A portion of the proceeds from book sales that evening will be donated to the Franklin College Pulliam School of Journalism.
"We're excited about the opportunity to reach out to the local community," said Pulliam School of Journalism Director John Krull. "It's an insightful program on a worthwhile and interesting topic."
Dunham has written 15 books for young adults, all centering on historic American figures. A native of Indianapolis, some of her most recognized works are included in the Young Patriots Series of historical fiction.
Morrison’s illustrating career spans over more than 20 years. She has illustrated a variety of award-winning titles, including all 13 Young Patriot books.
For information about the program, persons may call 317-738-8208
Won’t you all join us for what will be a wonderful evening for children’s book lovers!
Warmly,
Florrie
A New Young Patriot Joins the Line-up!
Introducing John Audubon, Young Naturalist
The newest offering from the Young Patriots Series features the childhood of John James Audubon, the world-famous wildlife artist, whose drawings of birds and animals still set the bar for excellence today. The young John's love of drawing sends him into the fields and woods near his country house in pursuit of winged models. Games and adventures also beckon: John confronts a ghost in the old water mill tower, presents his friend Cecile with a surprise birthday gift (that goes horribly wrong!), and sails off to seek his fortune in America. Check out a sample chapter, free Teacher’s guide and webquest and more at the John Audubon, Young Naturalistwebsite!

Celebrate National Poetry Month! The Young Patriot Poets . . .
The importance of nurturing the creative thoughts of our children and students through poetry is the focal point of this month as we celebrate National Poetry Month! Think of creative ways to bring poetry into your daily reading activities.
Try this! A fun activity to incorporate both history research and poetry is to have your child or student research a past or present poet. Have him/her examine the tone of the poems by the chosen poet. How did the poet grow up? What historical events were happening during the poet’s lifetime that are evident in the poetry? Now that you know more about the poet and how and when he/she lived, write your own poem as if you were that poet, using the same tone and themes.
For example, Young Patriot James Whitcomb Riley had become known as “The Hoosier Poet” and “The Children’s Poet” because of his vivid description of Hoosier and American life in the during the turn of the century, many of them geared toward children.
Another Young Patriot poet, Phillis Wheatley, was the first African-American poet and writer of consequence. The themes and tones of her poetry are quite different from those of James Whitcomb Riley, as she was born nearly a century earlier and sold as a slave at the age of seven.
Save 25% on James Whitcomb Riley and Phillis Wheatley during National Poetry Month.

In honor of New Young Patriot—John Audubon
Volume 12 of the Young Patriots Series
– John Audubon, Young Naturalist–
depicts the boyhood adventures of the
famous bird and wildlife artist.
From the John Audubon, Young Naturalist Teacher’s Guide:
Onomatopoeia means words that are invented to imitate
real sounds. Some bird names (e.g., chickadee, whippoorwill)
sound just like their songs! Challenge children to think of
more birds that were named for the sounds they make
