From the Creator of
the Young Patriots Series
Hello! This month I'm happy to share my space with a guest-six-year-old Granite who lives in Kentucky. Granite participated in our newsletter Discussion Topic and submitted a suggestion as to who he would like to see featured in the Young Patriots Series. Here's what he wrote (reprinted with permission):
My name is Granite. I am 6 years old. I have read all of your books. I have lots of favorites. Eddie Rickenbacker, George Rogers Clark, Juliette Low, Amelia Earhart, and John Hancock are my favorites. Well, pretty well all of them are my favorites!
I think the next book should be George Washington because he gave America freedom from Britain. He was the first President of the United States and he was a great leader. I would like to more about when he was young.
Thanks for your great books!
Thank YOU, Granite, for taking the time to write, and we hope you enjoy the free book you received as the winner of our drawing. Thank you to all of you who submitted suggestions. Keep them coming as we want to hear from you. March’s Discussion Topic awaits!
Happy Women’s History Month—don’t miss our resources that will help you celebrate and our spotlight on a very special “girl!”
Warmly,
Florrie
Our American Heroines
Celebrating Women's History Month with the Women You Know
and the Women in History Whom You Want to Know More About!
The women of America’s history are deserving of year-long, every day recognition. They have given us modern day conveniences, works of art and literature still unparalleled today, philosophies now rooted in our everyday lives, organizations still cherished and more. Most importantly, these American heroines empowered women to dream and achieve, and led the way in breaking the centuries-old mold of what women could and were expected to do.
This month we celebrate all women – those who broke new ground in the past and those women today who continue the path of women’s rights.
How will you celebrate Women's History Month? Perhaps the most important way one can honor and celebrate women - past and present - is through learning more about these women. Ask your child or student "What woman has most profoundly affected your life?" This woman does not have to be alive today.
Have your child or student interview that woman if possible. If the woman is not alive today, students can do research about that woman – read a book about her, interview others close to that person, etc. Ask your child or student to think about a current, troubling situation in his/her own life. Then ask, “Now that you know more about your female role model, how do you think she would handle that situation?”
