From the Creator of
the Young Patriots Series
Hello! Saturday was the annual Butler University Children’s Literature Conference, held annually at Butler in Indianapolis. Valiska Gregory, writer-in-residence at Butler and Shirley and Rebecca Mullin of Kids Ink bookstore in Indianapolis have organized the conference since 1991, which has featured Newberry and Caldecott authors and illustrators such as Lois Lowry, Jerry Pinckney, and Pam Munoz Ryan.
I spoke this year on the “Rebirth of a Classic”—the story of the metamorphosis of the Childhood of Famous Americans into the Young Patriots. The editor of all of the Young Patriots Series, Harold Underdown, who among his many credentials is the author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Publishing Your Children’s Book, also presented at the conference—for those of you interested in writing for children, Harold has tons of great information on his website, INCLUDING how to get out of the “slush pile” (publishing talk for the tons of manuscript submissions received by the major houses).
The day was a treat for children’s book lovers, and I encourage you to visit the Conference website to learn more and put it on YOUR calendar for 2007!
Celebrate Black History Month and the coming of spring!
Warmly,
Florrie

One of the most productive, and educational, ways to get children involved in history – especially in history honoring the brave men and women who helped fight against human prejudices– is by enabling those children to relate to such historic figures.
The Young Patriots Series allows young readers to do just that! Depicting the childhood adventures of our nation’s heroes and heroines leads readers into the lives and thoughts of those who made our world the way we know it today. Phillis Wheatley, Young Revolutionary Poet is the fictional biography of Wheatley’s childhood as she rose from slavery to become one of the most well known poets – and the first published African-American female poet – of her day and an inspiration to future women and African-American writers. Learn More. Mahalia Jackson, Gospel Singer & Civil Rights Champion depicts the childhood adventures of Mahalia Jackson, who became known as the “Queen of Gospel” and who rallied aside Martin Luther King, Jr. during the famous Civil Rights March on Washington. Read On.
Don’t Forget!Sunday, February 5, 2006 (Monday February 6th for schools) is the Seventeenth National African American Read-in. Sponsored by the Black Caucus of NCTE and by NCTE. Join over a million readers in this year’s nation-wide event! For more information on the Seventeenth National African American Read-in, Click Here.
Did you know that Young Patriot Mahalia Jackson was responsible for Martin Luther King, Jr. giving the I Have a Dream speech?
“On August 28, 1963, more than 250,000 people . . . gathered near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington to rally for "jobs and freedom." Speakers were allotted fifteen minutes, but the day belonged to the young and charismatic leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had originally prepared a short and somewhat formal recitation of the sufferings of African Americans. He was about to sit down when gospel singer Mahalia Jackson called out, "Tell them about your dream, Martin! Tell them about the dream!" Encouraged by shouts from the audience, King drew upon some of his past talks, and the result became the landmark statement of civil rights in America -- a dream of all people, of all races and colors and backgrounds, sharing in an America marked by freedom and democracy.”

Children can work individually or with a friend or parent to complete the WebQuest by following links to gather information about Harrison’s childhood and adult achievements so that they can create board games to showcase (and teach others) what they’ve learned.
