Beyond the Book . . .
Activities for Kids, Parents and Teachers
John Hancock

Volume 9 of the Young Patriots Series
John Hancock, Independent Boy–
depicts the boyhood adventures of the
famous signer of the Declaration of Independence.

In honor of the anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, December 16th, which led to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, here is a classroom activity from the
John Hancock, Independent Boy
Teacher’s Guide:

“Put your John Hancock on it” is a saying that means “write your signature.” The story describes Johnny’s sloppy penmanship in childhood, but of course, his signature on the Declaration of Independence was the first and most famous. Students can view the Declaration and other documents and letters from the time period at the Library of Congress American Memory site. Type “John Hancock” and related terms (e.g. Continental Congress, Declaration of Independence) into the Search box to find all related items in the Library’s collection.
