Hook Kids on History and Reading in 2006
With The Young Patriots Series.

November is Aviation Month! Why not celebrate one of mankind’s most ingenious achievements—the ability of flight—by learning about the childhood adventures of two famous aviators? The Young Patriots Amelia Earhart (the first woman to ever fly solo across the Atlantic) and Eddie Rickenbacker (fearless World War I flying Ace) proved that impossible dreams can be achieved.

Hello to all. A picture is worth many more than a thousand words, so I hope you enjoy the following memories of the October 21st event with author Montrew Dunham at Indiana Authors Bookstore. Illustrator Cathy Morrison's original art from the books drew rave reviews from all those who attended, as did Montrew.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!

Warmly,

Florrie

Happy Birthday George Rogers Clark!

George Rogers Clark is revered as a Revolutionary War General. His victory over the British at the Battle of Vincennes resulted in doubling the size of the American colonies, adding the Northwest Territory, which later became the states of Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and parts of Minnesota. Younger brother William would follow in his explorer brother’s footsteps and become the famous leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

In volume 8 of the Young Patriots Series, George Rogers Clark, Boy of the Northwest Frontier, readers will follow young George though the wilderness, whether he is rescuing baby raccoons or braving raging floodwaters. Click here to learn more.

Divide students into teams of three to learn more about colonial life. Have each team research one region: Southern Colonies, New England Colonies, and the Middle Colonies. Create a large Venn diagram (interlocking circles) comparing daily life in each region.

Did You Know?
Fun Facts to Celebrate Aviation Month with Young Patriots Amelia Earhart and Eddie Rickenbacker!

  • When Eddie first started flying, he was often airsick.
  • Amelia Earhart was nicknamed "Lady Lindy" because her slim physique and facial structure resembled Charles Lindbergh.
  • When the plane carrying Eddie on a government mission crashed into the ocean, the surviving men had only enough food for three days. They were in danger of starving when on the eight day, a seagull landed on Eddie's head. The bird became a source of food and fish bait that allowed them to live until they were rescued.
  • On May 20, 1937, Amelia and her navigator took off from Oakland, California to begin a record-breaking flight around the world. Somewhere between New Guinea and Howland Island, their plane disappeared, never to be found.
  • Eddie Rickenbacker said, "Courage is doing what you're afraid to do. There can be no courage unless you're scared."
