From the Creator of
the Young Patriots Series

Hello! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season. This time of year is a time for reflection on the past but also for looking toward the future, which is why we're asking YOU to put YOUR publisher hats on and help us decide who should be featured in upcoming Young Patriots titles. We value your input and wouldn't think of asking for your thoughts without rewarding you - see details later in this newsletter.

Hurricane Katrina was an event of 2005 that devastated a huge number of lives. Food and shelter and the basic necessities of life were and are still priorities, but restoring the schools and libraries and books that were destroyed also remains a tremendous challenge. Many organizations and publishers have worked together to donate books to the affected areas, including the 4,000 member Independent Book Publishers Association (PMA), of which I am a board member. Our sister foundation, Literacy for Life, partnered with Operation USA this holiday to donate more than 10,000 books to children affected by Katrina. Find pictures and details about Operation USA and the book giveaway here.

2005 was a wonderful year for the Young Patriots Series, thanks to your loyal support. As we begin 2006, we look forward to partnering with you in continuing our mission of bringing history to life for young people. Thank you for your belief in us, and best wishes for a happy and prosperous 2006!

Warmly,

Florrie

Was William Henry Harrison Assassinated?
New Medical Reviews Question
the Ninth President’s Death

The following article is courtesy of Was William Henry Harrison Assassinated By Nicholas F. Benton

Did the ninth president of the United States, the first to die in office, actually succumb to pneumonia one month after his inauguration, or was he the victim of foul play?

A review of the medical reports of the so-called "treatment" regimen imposed on the 69-year old Gen. William Henry Harrison when he fell ill shortly after taking office in March 1841 provides circumstantial evidence that the elderly hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe might have been murdered by medical assassins. An official report at the time stated that he died not of pneumonia, but of the treatment he was subjected to for "an ordinary winter cold."

Did You Know!

William Henry Harrison became the ninth President of the United States on March 4, 1841. His term was the shortest of any president, for he died only one month into his term – becoming the first president to die in office.

Harrison’s greatest life and patriotic achievements, therefore, occurred prior to becoming President. The Battle of Thames (October 5, 1813), where Harrison defeated British and Indian forces, ended in the death of the famous Indiana leader, Tecumseh.
But the battle that made Harrison a hero took place near Lafayette, Indiana. Learn more about the famous battle of Tippecanoe, which led to Tecumseh’s downfall at the Battle of Thames, and how you can visit the battlefield here. Indiana holds Harrison as one of its own founding fathers from his twelve-year term as Territorial Governor.

Harrison's was the first Presidential candidate to use at the time unheard of campaign tactics. He was the first president to have a campaign slogan, “Tippecanoe and Tyler, too!”

Beyond the Book . . .
Activities for Kids, Parents and Teachers

Happy Birthday John Hancock! Hancock is Volume 9 in the Young Patriots Series – John Hancock, Independent Boy. He was witness to the Boston Tea Party and Boston Massacre, Freedom Fighter and tireless advocate for separation from England.

From the John Hancock, Independent Boy
Teacher’s Guide:

Children can work individually or with a friend or parent to complete the WebQuest by following links to gather information about the events leading up to the colonists’ demand for independence from Britain. When their articles are complete, children can compile them into a fictional colonial-style newspaper.

A wonderful website, not to be missed, is Join the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, sponsored by the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). It is an interactive exhibit where students can “virtually” sign (with virtual quill pens, naturally) their names, alongside Hancock’s, and then print their own copy of the Declaration!

February is Black History Month!

  • Sunday, February 5, 2006 (Monday February 6th for schools) is the Seventeenth National African American Read-in. Sponsored by the Black Caucus of NCTE and by NCTE. Join over a million readers in this year’s nation-wide event!

Schools, churches, libraries, bookstores, community and professional organizations, and interested citizens are urged to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month by hosting and coordinating Read-Ins in their communities. Hosting a Read-In can be as simple as bringing together friends to share a book, or as elaborate as arranging public readings and media presentations that feature professional African American writers.
To be counted as participants, simply:

    • Select books authored by African Americans;
    • Conduct your Read-In(s) on the days designated; and
    • Report your results by submitting the 2006 African American Read-In Report Card.

For more information on the Seventeenth National African American Read-in, Click Here.
