From
the Creator of the Young Patriots Series
Hello,
Did you know that anyone can suggest a subject to be featured
on a United States postage stamp? All you have to do is mail
a letter with your request. Learn more about how to suggest
a stamp here.
I sent a letter asking that one of the newest Young Patriots
Series subjects (hint, initials are PW) be featured on a stamp-if
you are an educator, as a writing exercise, why not have the
children in your class write a letter requesting a stamp honoring
their hero or heroine and explaining why they chose that person?
Highlights of this issue include fun facts about Women's
History Month and an important announcement of the expansion
of the Young Patriots Series beyond print. Happy Birthday
to the Girl Scouts, who celebrate their 93rd birthday this
month. Juliette Low, founder of the Girl Scouts, was featured
on a 3-cent stamp issued in 1948!
As always, we love to hear from you-email us at newsletter@patriapress.com
with your comments and suggestions.
Warmly,
Florrie Kichler

The Girl Scouts Celebrate
Over 90 Years of Inspiration!
"I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and
all of America, and all the world, and we're going to
start it tonight!"
March
12, 2005 marks the 93rd birthday of the Girl Scouts
of the U.S.A.

On this day in 1912, Juliette Gordon
Low - at 51 years old - held the first "Girl Guide" troop meeting
in Savannah, Georgia. The name would be changed the next year
to "Girl Scouts."
Throughout its first year, eighteen
girls joined Girl Guide. Today, the Girl Scouts membership includes
millions of girls world-wide.

Scouts of the U.S.A., visit their website.

"From a Grassroots Organization into a
National Institution 25 YEARS of Writing Women Back into History"
Patria Press is proud to be among the sponsoring partners
of this educational organization!
What is
the National Women's History Project?
One of the NWHP's greatest accomplishments
was "convincing Congress and the White House of the
need for our nation to celebrate and recognize women's role
in history on an annual basis. As a result of the NWHP efforts,
the week of March 8th (International Women's Day) was officially
designated as National Women's History Week. In 1987, the
organization led the successful campaign to have the entire
month of March declared National Women's History Month."
Today the group's aim is as clear and simple
as it was 25 years ago: to teach as many people as possible
about women's role in history. For more information, visit
the National Women's History Project website.
DID
YOU KNOW -
Fun
Facts for Women's History Month . . .
- There are nearly 150 million females in the United
States. That exceeds the number of males (143.0
million).
- Of those females, 82.5 million are mothers.
- Thirty-one percent of women ages 25 to 29 years
had attained a bachelor's degree or higher in 2003,
which exceeded that of men in this age range (26%).
- Eighty-eight percent of young women and 85 percent
of young men have completed high school. The last
year young women and men had equal rates of high
school and college attainment was 1995.
- Nearly three million females participated in high
school athletic programs in the 2002-03 school year.
In the 1972-73 school year, only 800,000 females
were members of a high school athletic team.
- There are 20.3 million female workers in education,
health and social services industries. More women
work in this industry group than in any other.
- Sixteen percent of Persian Gulf War (1990-91)
veterans are women. In contrast, women account for
5 percent of World War II vets, 3 percent of Vietnam
vets and 2 percent of Korean War vets.
