A New Discovery in Young Patriot’s History A Letter by Phillis Wheatley Auctioned at Record Bid!
On November 22, 2005 Swann Galleries of New York auctioned a newly found letter written by Phillis Wheatley, the first published African-American poet.
The letter was dated February 14, 1776. Wheatley had sent the letter from Providence to her friend Obour Tanner in Newport. It had been known that Wheatley shared a friendship with Mr. Tanner and other letters between the two have already been published. This letter had been separated from others and just recently discovered. Click Here to view the actual letter!
The letter finally sold to a private collector for $ 253,000! This is an auction record for any letter written by an African-American, and quite possibly the record for any letter written by a woman!
Young Patriot Phillis Wheatley is a recent addition to the Young Patriots Series in Volume 10 – Phillis Wheatley, Young Revolutionary Poet. The book for young readers depicts Ms. Wheatley’s childhood experiences of being kidnapped from Africa to be sold at a slave auction at the age of seven to the prosperous Wheatley family in Boston. Largely self educated, Phillis rose from slavery to become one of the most well-known poets of her day and an inspiration to future women and African-American writers. Learn More.
In 1772, Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral by Phillis Wheatley was published. Another Young Patriot, John Hancock, was among those who signed the attestation that Phillis Wheatley, an African American, was its author.
