Dear Subscribers-Welcome back!
And just in time for back-to-school, welcome to our newest Young
Patriot, John Hancock. As you know, our Series was originally
published nearly 70 years ago, so often I am in touch with descendents
of the original authors. And such is the case with Kathryn Sisson,
author of "John Hancock." I was fortunate enough to
visit with her daughter and granddaughter this summer in Minneapolis,
and not only did they bring photos of Kathryn and scrapbooks
to share with me, but they were tremendously supportive and
thrilled to see their mother and grandmother's books come back
to life.
Meeting the families of the authors
and, in the case of Montrew Dunham and Kathryn Kilby, meeting
the authors themselves, is by far the best part of my job. It's
easy to forget in the course of dealing with emails, meeting
printer and illustrator deadlines and running a business that
there are real people who created these wonderful stories and
their children are counting on me to keep their legacy alive.
Talking with them is a wonderful reminder that the business
of publishing is people.
Their trust in me is an honor
as is yours by subscribing to this newsletter. A big thank-you
to them AND to you.
And best wishes for a very happy
and productive school year.
Warmly,
Florrie

First to Sign the Declaration
of Independence
Ninth in the Young Patriots Series
Meet John Hancock, Independent Boy
Upon signing the Declaration of Independence:
"The British ministry can read that name without spectacles;
let them double their reward," said John Hancock whose
fame for the size of his signature was only matched by his devotion
to public service and the cause of American freedom.
"When I grow up I want to be a general or
a sea captain and sail the seven seas. Then I can live in Boston
when I'm not at sea or fighting a war somewhere," claimed
young John Hancock.
The Young Patriots Series welcomes John
Hancock, Independent Boy, Volume 9, the story of the
most famous signer of the Declaration of Independence growing
up in the cradle of the American Revolution. Snowball fights
with Paul Revere, hiding American seaman from capture by the
British, and visits to Samuel Adams' printing press are just
a few of "Johnny's" adventures in pre-Revolutionary
War Boston.
And, in addition to the "What
Happened Next," "Fun
Facts About," and "When
John Hancock Lived" features included in every Young
Patriots book, NEW in Volume 9 is "What
Does That Mean?"-the young reader discovers the meanings
of words in the book such as " foolscap" and "frigate,"
and educators have an additional teaching tool!

"I Have
a Dream"--March on Washington Anniversary and Mahalia Jackson
John Hancock fought the first battles for our individual freedoms,
and Martin Luther King carried on that fight for civil rights
nearly 200 years later.
August 28 marks the 41st anniversary of the famous March on
Washington and Reverend King's "I Have a Dream" speech.
As Mahalia Jackson stood at Dr. King's side at the podium and
sang the famous spiritual, "I've Been 'Buked and I've Been
Scorned," a journalist wrote, "The button-down men
in front and the old women in back came to their feet screaming
and shouting. They had not known that this thing was in them,
and that they wanted it touched. From different places and different
ways, with different dreams they had come, and now, hearing
this sung, they were one." 1
