Hello to all my subscribers-I
hope you're reading this at the beach, at the mountains, at
a theme park or at least in the back yard on a lawn chair! And
if not, this issue will be perfect to get the travel bug as
we focus on historic sites associated with our Young Patriots.
As promised, this issue is a short
one so I can take a summer break as well-but not for too long
because the birth of a new Young Patriot (hint: think Declaration
of
Independence
) will be announced in August along with a
host of back-to-school ideas and activities.
In the meantime, don't forget to keep the children
in your life reading this summer!
Warmly,
Florrie

"These men died to save
the National Capital, and they did save it." -General Lew
Wallace, the Battle of Monocacy
Visit the 140th Anniversary Re-Enactment of the
Battle of Monocacy in Maryland on July 16-18. If you've never had the
opportunity to see a Civil War battle reenactment, I strongly
recommend that you check this one out. You will feel as though
you have been transported back in time.
The Battle of Monocacy was one of the most important
battles of the Civil War. Had General Lew Wallace not delayed
the Confederate General Jubal Early by engaging him in battle
in Maryland on July 9, Early would have reached Washington DC
before Union reinforcements could arrive and likely have captured
the Capital. For more information, check the website of the
reenactment, "To
the Gates of Washington."
To learn more about the Battle itself, visit the
Monocacy
Battlefield website.
History Alive-Where Did They
Live?
Since each one of our Young Patriots was a real person,
each has a birthplace and/or one or more historical sites where
he or she jumps off the pages of history and becomes a living
breathing human being. Here are some places you and the children
in your life can visit to bring our American heroes and heroines
to life!

Accelerated Reader --Can
You Help?
Many of you have asked if the Young Patriots Series is
part of the "Accelerated Reader" (tm) program. While
the Series is included in the Scholastic "Reading
Counts" (tm) program, we have not yet been able to
penetrate AR. Accelerated Reader (tm) chooses books for its
quiz
program based on requests from educators.
If you would like to see the Young Patriots Series as part
of
the program, we would very much appreciate your
following the link below to the Accelerated Reader (tm)
website and recommending our titles. For your convenience, a
complete list of our titles follows with the information that
AR needs.
Thank you so much for your time!
