Young Patriots Bulletin (web edition)

Hook Kids on History!
June, 2004
Vol. 1, Number 5

Featured Article:       From the Creator of the Young Patriots Series

Hook Kids on History in June:
June 12: George Bush, the 41st US president, was born in 1924
June 14: Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, was born in 1811.
June 18: Launch of the first American woman in space, Sally Ride, aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1983.
June 27: The melody, "Happy Birthday To You" was composed in 1859 by Mildred J. Hill, a schoolteacher who was born on this date.

I have just returned from the annual BookExpo convention in Chicago-some of you may have read that President Clinton gave the keynote address which kicked off three days of the publishing and bookselling industry celebrating the printed word. Among the personal highlights for me was the opportunity to talk to children's booksellers at the annual "Book Buzz" event put on by the Association of Booksellers for Children, and to support the Young Patriots Series illustrator, Cathy Morrison, as she signed more than 75 books for children's historical fiction lovers! (see photo below)

Many of you are winding down the school year and looking forward to a summer of relaxation and (hopefully) catching up on that novel you've been meaning to read. But don't forget to encourage the children in your lives to read as well-you'll find some suggestions for summer reading activities in this issue. A special feature this month is the "Young Patriots on the Road"-check out photos from some of our activities over the past few months.

Don't miss a chance to determine the future direction of the Young Patriots-tell us who YOU would like to see featured in upcoming titles by taking our 2-minute survey in this issue. We need your input! (especially because the results of the last survey fell victim to a technological glitch which has thankfully now been repaired)

Even Young Patriots have to take a vacation so our July issue will be a short one. But then watch for the August announcement of our newest title!

And as always, thank you so much for your support of our Young Patriots Series.

Warmly,

Florrie Binford Kichler

Week 1 begins with "Celebrate Summer", which includes such suggestions as "make a chart to keep track of all the books you read this summer," and "start a summer scrapbook."

By the end of Week 10, "Honor Summer's End," you are making a list of school supplies and reviewing the book chart started in Week 1. For the complete list of all 10 weeks' activities, visit the Reading Rockets website.
