From the Creator of the Young Patriots Series

As the year draws to a close, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your interest in the Young Patriots Series. During the recent Association of Indiana Media Educators Conference, many of you stopped by to chat and express your support in person, which I very much appreciated.

If there's one thing I've learned in the process of bringing these books back to life, it's that a good story is a good story, no matter how old it is. And how do I know that the Young Patriots books are good stories? The acid test (which so far, every school I've visited has passed) is if 100-plus fourth-graders sit still while being read to from Amelia Earhart, Young Air Pioneer!

As we celebrate the season in our diverse ways, let's celebrate our basic freedoms on Bill of Rights day.

Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous new year.

Warmly,

Florrie

New "Patriots" Underway for 2005!

Phillis Wheatley was the first African-American writer of consequence in America. She was born in 1753 in Africa but was kidnapped at the age of seven and sold at a slave auction to the prosperous Wheatley family in Boston. With the help of the Wheatley family, Phillis was educated in the English, Greek and Latin languages, as well as in astronomy, history and geography. She was greatly influence by the poets Milton, Pope and Gray. Phillis Wheatley became one of the most well-known poets of her day and a true inspiration to future African-American writers. Coming Soon in 2005!
Abner Doubleday served in the Mexican War and in a campaign against the Seminole Indians in Florida as a young man; but became most known as a successful captain and lieutenant colonel, strongly opposed to slavery, in the Union Army during the Civil War. Abner Doubleday is also credited with improving the game of baseball. Coming Soon in 2005!

Celebrate Bill of Rights Day!

he following activity is a good way to help your students understand what each of the Rights means, and why they are important.

Create a Bill of Rights Book! Each page of the book, made of construction paper, will represent one Right. For each Right, the students will summarize its meaning, express how he/she feels about it and how it reflects his/her life today.
