What Happened Next?

  • Lew Wallace returned from the Mexican War and became a lawyer and Indiana state senator.

  • Between 1861 and 1865, he served in the Union Army during the Civil War and earned the rank of major general. He saved Cincinnati from falling into Confederate hands and played a key role in defending the city of Washington DC in 1864.

  • In 1878, he became the governor of the territory of New Mexico

  • Ben-Hur was published in 1880. More than 20 million people saw Ben-Hur ,the play, which was performed continuously on Broadway from 1899 to 1921.

  • In 1881, Lew Wallace traveled to Turkey as the American ambassador.
