Celebrate Women's History Month -- New Children's Book Series Highlights

Amelia Earhart

As we begin Women's History Month, American schoolchildren have a new opportunity to look back at the heroines that fostered our country’s growth and development. In the "Young Patriots Series," a new series of biographies for young readers introduced by Patria Press, Inc., kids will meet a host of prominent American citizens, beginning with one of America’s most famous woman aviators, Amelia Earhart.

In the pages of the book, "Amelia Earhart, Young Air Pioneer," Volume 1 in the Young Patriots Series of biographies for children ages 8-12, kids will meet a young Kansas heroine who showed the traits of courage and grace under pressure at an early age. Rescuing the neighbor boys from an angry dog, building (and riding!) her own roller coaster, narrowly missing danger while sledding on an icy hill--all these adventures and more will delight young readers as they identify with Amelia Earhart as a child just their age. Adults will appreciate the positive portrayal of the young Amelia Earhart as a precursor to the undaunted explorer she would become.

Originally published in 1950 as part of the Childhood of Famous Americans Series®*, "Amelia Earhart, Young Air Pioneer" has been revised with new content, a new cover, new interior design and new illustrations. “The Young Patriots books are not biographies per se, but rather introductions to biography,” explains publisher Florrie Binford Kichler. “We call the books ‘storyographies’ because each title is first and foremost the story of episodes from the individual’s childhood. Although every incident mentioned in the book may not have actually occurred, it is still true to the character and time of the subject.”

The author, Jane Moore Howe, former journalist and now an octogenarian, tells of her correspondence with Ms. Earhart’s sister, Muriel, while writing the book in 1949. “She gave me many fascinating and necessary details of their childhood that I couldn’t have found any other way. I wanted to show Amelia Earhart’s courage even as a child, and, thanks to Muriel, I was able to do so.”

Mrs. Howe displayed courage of her own during the writing of the book. “How could I write about Amelia Earhart going up in a plane for the first time if I had never experienced it myself?,” she explains. “So I went to the airport--this was 1949, mind you!--took my very first plane ride in a tiny training plane and landed with my stomach doing flip-flops. Then I knew how Amelia must have felt.”

Volume 1 in the Young Patriots Series, "Amelia Earhart, Young Air Pioneer" (ISBN 1-882859-2-02), by Jane Moore Howe, illustrated by Cathy Morrison and published by Patria Press, Inc., retails for $14.95, with 112 pages, 17 black and white illustrations, full color cover and hard binding. In addition, just published and available now is Volume 2, the story of our ninth President, "William Henry Harrison, Young Tippecanoe."

Amelia Earhart Found!

The search for Amelia Earhart is over at last! The missing pilot visits the Indianapolis area Tuesday, April 20, landing at James Allison Elementary School in Speedway, Indiana at 10 a.m. and at Noblesville Southeastern Public Library in Noblesville later that evening at 7 p.m. Indiana publisher Patria Press, Inc. and the Indiana Humanities Council sponsor her appearance.

The famed aviator travels to Indianapolis to celebrate the release of the new book, Amelia Earhart, Young Air Pioneer. Originally published nearly 50 years ago by Indianapolis-based publisher Bobbs-Merrill as part of the classic Childhood of Famous Americans Series, Amelia Earhart, Young Air Pioneer has been redesigned and. republished by Indiana publisher Patria Press, Inc. as Volume I in the newly-named Young Patriots Series of fictional biographies for young readers.  Octogenarian author, Jane Moore Howe, tells of her correspondence with Earhart’s sister, Muriel, while writing the book in 1949. “She gave me many fascinating and necessary details of their childhood that I couldn’t have found any other way. I wanted to show Amelia Earhart’s courage even as a young girl and, thanks to Muriel, I was able to do so.”

The first six volumes in the Young Patriots Series will feature the youthful adventures of famous American heroes and heroines with Indiana connections, beginning with Amelia Earhart, who taught at Purdue University, and including William Henry Harrison, James Whitcomb Riley and Lew Wallace, author of Ben Hur.

Earhart set numerous flight records in her short career. She was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic in 1928, the first person to fly from Hawaii to California, and the fastest woman to fly nonstop across the U.S. As she “visits” the Indianapolis region, she will speak about her upcoming record-setting flight around the world. Amelia Earhart is portrayed by Ann Birney, a member of Ride Into History, an historic performance troupe that has performed all over the country.

“Miss Earhart’s courage, independence and persistence in spite of adversity makes her a wonderful role model for today’s youth,” notes Patria Press president Florrie Binford Kichler. “The Indiana Humanities Council and Patria Press are proud to introduce Ms. Birney as Amelia Earhart to the children of our area.”

The Indiana Humanities Council, whose mission is to enrich personal and civic life in Indiana through the humanities (history, literature, and civics), regularly sponsors similar events through its History Alive! program.

Who Wrote the Best-Selling Novel of the 19th Century?

If you said Charles Dickens or Mark Twain, guess again.

The novelist whose book has been in print for more than 100 years was born in middle America.

His father was governor of a state better known for basketball than for books.

His novel featured a chariot race that was immortalized on film by Charlton Heston.

As an adult, Lew Wallace became a Civil War general, statesman, inventor, artist and the author of the best-selling novel Ben-Hur.

But, long before Ben-Hur made him world-famous, Lew Wallace was a boy, a boy who played hooky from school on a regular basis and earned a suspension more than once.  A boy who drew portraits of his school mates with a “magic pencil” instead of tending to his arithmetic lesson.

Learn the details of these and the many other adventures of the young man who created the most exciting chariot race in history  in the new Volume 3 of the Young Patriots Series, Lew Wallace, Boy Writer, by Martha E. Schaaf.  Issued by Indiana publisher Patria Press, Inc., this latest offering chronicles the childhood of the author of a bestselling novel that has been in print for more than 100 years.

Lew Wallace, Boy Writer tells the story of Lew’s growth from a confused and rebellious youth to the creative writer and heroic soldier he became. Kids will cheer for Lew’s dramatic rescue of his baby brother from beneath the wheels of the family carriage, share his joy at discovering the world of books, and feel his pain at the punishment he suffered in the schoolroom

"Our Young Patriots Series puts the story back into history," explains publisher Florrie Binford Kichler. "Children like to read about children like themselves, and Lew Wallace's struggle to mature is something all kids can identify with."

The Young Patriots titles were originally published more than thirty years ago as part of the Childhood of Famous Americans Series. Patria Press is reintroducing the books with newly designed covers and new illustrations while retaining the classic text that children have been reading for two generations.

“Our mission is to hook kids on history and get them reading. We hope that parents and educators who loved these books in their original form will introduce the 21st century versions to their own children,” Ms. Kichler remarks.

Volume 3 in the Young Patriots Series, Lew Wallace, Boy Writer, by Martha E. Schaaf has just been released. Volume 1, Amelia Earhart, Young Air Pioneer by Jane Moore Howe, and Volume 2, the story of our ninth President, William Henry Harrison, Young Tippecanoe by Howard Peckham, are also available. All titles in the Series are issued in both hardback ($14.95) and paperback ($9.95) editions and are illustrated.
